Cologne´s Brewhouses

A true institution

Anyone who thinks traditional brewhouses are only found in Bavaria would be mistaken. In Cologne, they have been an important part of the city’s culture. Cologne brewhouses bring together local traditions, Rhineland food and the city´s unique Kölsch culture. They are places where Cologne locals meet, celebrate their customs and enjoy the open, welcoming spirit the city is known for. Many of Cologne’s brewhouses date back to the 19th century, when the city’s breweries began to grow. Originally, these pubs were directly connected to the brewery and served Kölsch straight from the brewing cellar. As demand increased and bottled beer became more common, production gradually moved to larger brewery sites. The brewhouses remained and are still an essential part of Cologne today. They continue to attract locals and visitors who enjoy traditional brewhouse culture, hearty regional dishes and freshly tapped Kölsch.
