Halve Hahn

Not chicken. All cheese.

A true Cologne classic with a name that can easily cause confusion. Halve Hahn sounds like “half a chicken”, but there is no chicken involved at all. Visitors to Cologne are often surprised when they order one in a brewhouse and are served a rye roll with cheese instead. A traditional Halve Hahn comes with one or two slices of medium aged Gouda, half a rye roll with butter, pickles and mustard. At our FRÜH brewhouses, we serve it with our special FRÜH Hölländer, which is matured in our own cheese cellar.

No one knows exactly where the name comes from, but there are plenty of stories. One tells of a birthday guest who surprised everyone with cheese rolls instead of chicken. Another goes back to a wedding where there was not enough money for poultry, so cheese sandwiches were served instead. And according to another version, a guest simply asked for half a bread roll. Whatever the true story may be, one thing is certain: Halve Hahn has nothing to do with chicken. It is just true Cologne tradition on a plate.
