Pittermännchen

A keg full of Cologne spirit

A Pittermännchen is a small keg of Kölsch that you tap yourself, and for many people in Cologne, Kölsch simply tastes best this way. A few firm taps are all it takes to fix the tap in place, and the freshly poured Kölsch is ready to flow. Whether at a barbecue, a party or a get together with friends, a Pittermännchen is a true Cologne favourite ans quickly gets everyone in the right mood. There are several stories about where the name comes from. Some say it may have been named after Peter (“Pitter”) Josef Früh, founder of Cölner Hofbräu FRÜH. Others believe it comes from “Pitter”, the Cologne form of Peter, once very common name. Accoring to this story, men would take thei Pittermännchen out into the countryside on 29 June, the feast day of Peter and Paul, and celebrate together. Another explanation is much simpler: “Pitter” may simply have reffered to a smaller beer keg. Originally, the Pittermännchen was only available as a 10 L keg. Today, the popular Kölsch kegs come in sizes of up to 50 L. One thing is certain: a Pittermännchen stands for good company, Cologne tradition and freshly tapped Kölsch.
